Jimmy Kimmel took no prisoners on Wednesday night in his fight against the Republican effort to kill Obamacare.
In response to the Graham-Cassidy bill, Kimmel went off on Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy for lying to him when he agreed that any bill that repeals and replaces Obamacare should make health insurance more accessible and less expensive.
Kimmel’s monologue immediately went viral, and Republicans went on the attack along with Fox News.
Cassidy appeared on CNN to say that Kimmel just “doesn’t understand” the bill. But Kimmel has done his homework on this bill, and as the father of a baby who has had open heart surgery and will need two more such surgeries, Kimmel understands what healthcare coverage means for people, especially those who don’t have the means to afford it like he does.
Kimmel ripped Cassidy to shreds, pointing out that the bill guts Medicaid and allows states to decide whether people with pre-existing conditions will be able to get health insurance. Federal funding for healthcare would also end after 2026. In addition, over 30 million Americans would lose their current coverage if Obamacare is repealed.
Kimmel also noted that most medical organizations, including the American Hospital Association, the American Cancer Society, and American Medical Association strongly oppose the bill.
“Could it be, Senator Cassidy, that I do understand and you got caught with your G-O-Penis out?” Kimmel quipped.
Kimmel then compared Cassidy’s bill to a Major League Baseball pitch that takes a bad turn and hits us square in the balls.
Kimmel also took aim at Fox News host Brian Kilmeade, who wrote off Kimmel’s concerns as being from a member of the “Hollywood elite.”
“The reason I found this comment to be particularly annoying is because this is a guy, Brian Kilmeade, who whenever I see him kisses my ass like a little boy meeting Batman,” Kimmel replied after showing a clip of the remark. “Oh, he’s such a fan.”
“He follows me on Twitter, he asks me to write a blurb for his book, which I did,” Kimmel continued. “He calls my agent looking for projects. He’s dying to be a member of the Hollywood elite. The only reason he’s not a member of the Hollywood elite is because nobody will hire him to be one, and the reason I’m talking about this is because my son had an open heart surgery, has to have two more, and I learned there are kids with no insurance in the same situation. I don’t get anything out of this, Brian, you phony little creep. Oh, I’ll pound you when I see you.”
The audience cheered and it was clear that Kimmel was being totally genuine and actually cares about the people the GOP plan would hurt.
Kimmel is a comedian but he’s also a human being and an American citizen. His concerns are no less important just because he is on television. He’s dealing with a healthcare crisis and he wants to make sure Americans can take care of their kids like he is fortunate enough to be able to do. The Graham-Cassidy bill would price millions of Americans out of the insurance market. That’s not right. So Kimmel wants to inform Americans. He also wants Americans to call their representatives and senators in Congress to voice their opposition to the bill.

The bottom line is that Bill Cassidy made a promise and he lied to Kimmel’s face. Cassidy’s bill is worse than all the other healthcare bills that Republicans have tried to pass this year. And Republicans are lying about it in order to sell it to the American people. Thankfully, we have people like Jimmy Kimmel who care enough to read the bill and inform us about it. Republicans have been caught in a huge lie. It’s time for them to admit it and abandon this abominable piece of legislation.
