Things are pretty tense between Donald Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, now that Cohen is in hot water due to his $130,000 NDA payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Not only did the hush money fail to keep Daniels silent on her affair with Trump, but it has put Cohen right in the middle of a major investigation by the FBI, and it could very well turn Cohen against Trump — among many other things.
Although Cohen has gone above and beyond to protect Trump, their relationship shows signs of weakness. It’s recently been reported that Trump regularly abuses Cohen and treats him like ‘garbage’, making Cohen more likely to turn on his boss. Inside sources also reveal that Cohen went behind Trump’s back and reached out to his wife, Melania, in January — which will certainly have Trump seeing red.
The New York Times reported that in January, Cohen tried to apologize to Melania over the $130,000 hush payment while at a GOP fundraiser at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort — which blows up any hope Melania had that reports about the affairs were untrue (sorry, Trump).
While it’s unknown what Melania said in response and the First Lady has refused to publicly acknowledge the affair, her behavior speaks volumes. Over the last several weeks, she has canceled several appearances with Trump and now goes out of her way to avoid him at events.
Paul S. Ryan, vice president of policy and litigation for the watchdog Common Cause, told Business Insider that Cohen’s payments and his disclosure to Melania could help the FBI’s investigation on Trump and his personal lawyer. Ryan said:
Further investigation may … undercut any argument by Michael Cohen that this payment wasn’t about keeping the information from voters but to keep the information from Melania. I think to the extent that Cohen argues this was about keeping the information from Melania, then what Melania knew and when she knew it will certainly be relevant.”
Once again, Trump’s lies are exposed by his own team.
