As the Trump Administration rapidly collapses, outside governments are struggling to decide who they can deal with. And in South Korea’s case, they’ve been treating Ivanka as a “proxy” Secretary of State. Ivanka will meet with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha when she visits later this year. That’s right, a perfume and handbag maker is now at the center of the most delicate diplomatic situation of the past half-century.
But Ivanka might not be as incompetent as she seems. Ivanka has been at the center of many sketchy real estate deals that are suspected money laundering cases. And that’s without even mentioning some of the deals her husband has been involved in.
Why would Ivanka immediately fill the vacuum Tillerson left? Could Trump not tap someone with, I don’t know, actual qualifications for the position? Ivanka is more than likely to use being Secretary of State for her businesses, rather than helping the country. After all, she announced she had secured trademarks for her products in Asia after dining with the Chinese President. Maybe the North Korea negotiations won’t be so bad. After all, who could resist free handbags or some designer pumps in exchange for dismantling a national nuclear program?
Or maybe Ivanka has a special line of those bug-eyed sunglasses the leaders of North Korea always seem so fond of.
Either way, Ivanka quickly stepping in and assuming charge is disturbing. Is this how she acted when Tillerson was still there? Was he merely a smokescreen? And Ivanka has to know this Administration’s ship is sinking. Perhaps this is an effort to grab all the power and prestige she can before daddy is impeached.
Diplomacy is America’s best weapon. As Gen. Mattis says, less diplomacy means he has to buy more bullets. In an era of low-intensity conflicts that require more negotiation than battle, we need diplomats that are invested in America’s success-and not just looking fabulous.
