Donald Trump has never been one to follow rules, not even the strict protocols that must be followed by the President of the United States. Trump’s disregard of all guidelines and systems has gotten him in trouble more than once, but he still has not learned his lesson.
This morning, Trump announced the monthly federal jobs report — an hour before the report was even released! This breaches protocol that has been around for decades, and could even be considered a signal to traders as Trump tweeted that he was “looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning.”
As Trump suggested in his tweet, The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the data at 8:30, and showed that the unemployment rate had fallen to 3.8% and 223,000 jobs had been added to the economy. But in making this announcement, Trump broke the federal rule that stated federal workers shouldn’t comment on jobs reports until an hour after release.
The White House is trying to defend Trump, with White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisting that Trump’s tweet was fine because he did not “put the numbers out.” But that’s not saving Trump from being torn apart. As the numbers in the jobs report can lead to major changes in the stock market, Trump’s tweet is being highly criticized — especially from those who have some experience working with previous administrations and know why the protocol exists.
Jason Furman, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) under President Obama, said to Trump:
If this tweet is conveying inside information about a particularly good jobs number you should never get them in advance from the [CEA] again.”
Austan Goolsbee, another ex-CEA chair under Obama, tweeted:
If the president just tipped that the numbers are good, he broke the law. It’s classified information. The CEA gets the number the day before and even internally can only discuss the info on an encrypted line before release.”
Former White House spokesman under President George W. Bush, Ari Fleischer, called what Trump did a “no-no.”
Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers noted that if this had been done by any other president, it would have led to an investigation:
Trump is definitely held to a different standard — not only because of his stupidity and incompetence but because the GOP is spineless and refuses to let America have a real president.
