On Wednesday, Trump paid a visit to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. After meeting privately, the two hosted a joint press conference. Many things were discussed — improving NAFTA rather than completely tearing it up as Trump has repeatedly said he wants to do, stopping the flow of drugs into the United States, stopping the flow of weapons and money into Mexico. But one thing was strangely missing from the conference: Trump’s border wall that Mexico is totally going to pay for.
Trump said during his remarks that “we respect the right of either nation to build a physical wall,” but nothing more was said. This, of course, lead to a reporter asking The Big Question: who’s going to pay for the wall?
Trump confirmed that the wall was discussed, but that who’s going to pay for it was not mentioned between the two men. Trump’s central campaign goal — a wall that costs billions of dollars stretching along the border to keep out the “rapists” and “murderers” Nieto’s country keeps “sending” to the United States — was not important for The Donald to mention.
“Who pays for the wall? We didn’t discuss,” Trump told the reporter. “We did discuss the wall. We didn’t discuss payment of the wall. That’ll be for a later date.”
Why wasn’t “the wall” — Trump’s most important policy point if you can even call it that — mentioned? Trump wanted to play the visit safe. This was nothing more than a photo-op disguised as a policy visit.
Earlier, Hillary Clinton hammered Trump for his PR visit to Mexico:
“Getting countries working together was my job every day as Secretary of State. It’s more than a photo-op. It takes consistency and reliability. And it certainly takes more than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours, and then flying home again. That is not how it works.”
Sorry Trumpateers, your leader has betrayed you. The wall was never going to happen, and this proves it is not anything near a concern to him. He just wanted the publicity, and you fell for it.
After all, his big thing has been “Mexico will pay for it” — a point he “didn’t discuss.”
