The fact that Donald Trump does not really read (or work, for that matter) has been well-documented. However, there are certain things that the president needs to be briefed on, despite the fact that the president believes he doesn’t need to prepare for major summits because it’s all about “attitude.”
According to Axios, when Trump’s administration has to get him to read something, they have to resort to pretty much crazy, over the top methods — time that could be spent on much more critical things. Axios reports that instead of doing more important work, White House staffers busy themselves with putting together a briefing binder on a daily basis, which everyone refers to as “The Book.” This book, however, is not what it should be. It doesn’t have any policy analyses or detailed reports — it barely has any complete sentences.
Axios’ Mike Allen wrote that it’s more of a picture book than anything else:
The more effective approach with Trump is to use simple, short bullets, or a graphic or timeline — anything demonstrative. The packet can even include screen grabs of cable news chyrons.”
Trump sounds and behaves more like a toddler every day. Trump aides have also stated that giving him the news in short soundbites is really the only way they can hold his attention — or else they risk him turning on Fox News and getting all his misguided information there.
To demonstrate just how bad this situation is, staffers pretty much had a meltdown when former national security adviser H.R. McMaster tried to test Trump’s patience by giving him POTUS-appropriate, detailed presentations about complex issues like national security. One staffer griped, “He used complete sentences!”
Allen notes that Trump’s little picture book is the only way “to get real news and real facts into the president’s hands and head once he’s spooled up about a specific idea.” That is terrifying. I would really love any Trump supporter defend why Trump should be POTUS after learning that he can’t even sit through or comprehend a decent briefing. This is the height of Trump’s incompetence, and exactly why he shouldn’t be POTUS.
