Recently, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz endorsed a far-right pastor’s plan to restore sexual morality in black communities. This endorsement comes just a few days after Cruz hilariously stated that the most violent criminals are Democrats, so his completely out-of-touch approach isn’t surprising.
At a time when Black Lives Matter activists are taking a stand and demanding that racial inequality become a priority for presidential candidates, Cruz seems to be going in the complete opposite direction.
Buddy Pilgrim, Cruz’s national director for faith and religious liberty, expressed support for Christian minister and former Tea Party politician E.W. Jackson Sr. on Wednesday, saying that Cruz would back Jackson’s plan to “rescue America’s inner cities” from the “new epidemic of black on black violence and murder” and the breakdown of sexual morality. Speaking on behalf of Cruz, Pilgrim said:
This is exactly the kind of initiative that is needed for this country to help resolve the problems in the inner city and throughout our country. I know that if Senator Cruz were to become president of this country… he’d work with Bishop Jackson and other ministers like you to help create an environment where these kind of faith and business sector solutions can be implemented.”
Within this so-called solution is right-wing extremist, homophobic and racist rhetoric.
Predictably, Cruz is the only Republican candidate that supports Jackson’s ridiculous “recovery plan.” Jackson said:
We are looking for presidential leadership that shows that it cares about what’s going on in the inner cities and is going to do something about it. We reached out to every candidate that we could. Only one has expressed interest, support, and enthusiasm for doing something about this problem. He has a representative here today. That candidate is Senator Ted Cruz.”
Part of this plan, which is called “Project Awakening,” involves taking black children from “dysfunctional homes” and sending them to boarding school, because “the single greatest predictor of poverty is not race but the lack of a father in the home.” Jackson firmly believes that “a whole host of problems in our cities can be traced to single parent families” and that America should focus on its “sexual morality.”
Also in Project Awakening’s quest to create “a culture of sexual responsibility” is some good old shaming. Condemning pop culture and blaming female icons such as Beyonce and Miley Cyrus, Jackson says:
In a world where Beyoncé shakes her ‘bootie’ and Miley twerks, it is difficult to imagine a culture of sexual responsibility, let alone abstinence. Young ladies need help to break the pattern of sexual exploitation that reeks [sic] havoc on their lives…Ultimately, the absence of a caring father causes girls to go looking for love in all the wrong places.”
Both Jackson and Cruz have blamed the Black Lives Matter movement for the war on cops, and Cruz has previously said that the movement distracted America with police brutality, covering up the fact that “for every black person who is killed by a police officer, seventy are killed by someone in their own neighborhood.” Cruz and Jackson are basically a match made in conservative heaven, because they’re more than willing to blame black people for all America’s ills.
