Despite the fact that everyone else is recognizing June as LGBTQ Pride Month, Donald Trump is looking the other way – for the second year in a row.
Even though Trump has spoken on several other lesser known proclamations this month such as Great Outdoors Month, National Ocean Month, National Homeownership Month and African-American Music Appreciation Month, he still refuses to acknowledge LGBTQ individuals. The crazy thing is, Trump’s own State Department HAS, and it’s making Trump look even worse.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued this statement for “LGBTI Pride Month”:
LGBTI persons – like all persons – must be free to enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association, without fear of reprisal. As Americans, we place a high value on these rights and freedoms, which all persons deserve to enjoy fully and equally. The United States stands firmly with you as you exercise your human rights and fundamental freedoms. We wish you a safe and happy Pride Month.”
And yet, Trump has been absolutely silent and ignored the whole thing. People are starting to notice, and major LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign called the president and Vice President Mike Pence out for it, asking:
This response stands in stark contrast to the messages sent by former President Barack Obama, who fully acknowledged the month-long event during his presidency.
Trump has been sending mixed messages to the LGBTQ community for quite some time. He’s posed with the rainbow flag before and even stated that he would “do everything in [his] power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful, foreign ideology, believe me” after the Pulse nightclub shooting. However, his presidency and administration have sent opposing messages in trying to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military and cutting protections for transgender inmates and employees. Trump’s lack of recognition of the LGBTQ community is sending a strong message this month, and it’s not a good one.
