A New York priest has just acted in such a way that would make Pope Francis ashamed – and it’s completely understandable why.
Father Philip Pizzo, a priest at the St. Benedict Joseph Labre Church in Queens, New York, was the man responsible for a #JumpAgainstTrump meme that was shared to his private Facebook page, startling churchgoers who were shocked that their local Roman Catholic priest would share such a thought. The New York Post reported that the meme said:
Show your hate for Trump – do it for social justice.
The meme implied that anyone protesting or resisting Trump should kill themselves by jumping from buildings. Pizzo tried to backtrack and say that the meme was just for laughs because he thought asking anti-Trump protesters to commit suicide was “funny.” Pizzo gave this pathetic excuse:
I do not promote suicide. I’ve helped many people over the years, and it does not promote suicide. It was funny.
I think most of us would agree that there’s nothing funny about suicide “jokes.” Since the controversy surrounding the meme has risen, the 67-year-old priest has switched his Facebook profile to private.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the priest has taken a political stance on his page – he’s posted many other memes like this in the past. In a previous meme, Pizzo made fun of Hillary Clinton.
Pizzo’s meme has caused so much outrage that the Diocese of Brooklyn was forced to address the matter on Twitter, stating that “Father Pizzo regrets any offense he has caused. Suicide is a serious subject and his post does not at all represent the view of the church.”
Considering that the church Pizzo serves at has a large population of “mainly Latin American and Caribbean” churchgoers, you can imagine many of them oppose Trump and will want nothing to do with Pizzo after this. The Diocese of Brooklyn also explained that Pizzo had posted the meme, then deleted it because “He [Pizzo] says he intended it as satire only, regrets the offense it has caused and has deleted it.”
What Pizzo has encouraged is in direct violation of the Roman Catholic church’s Fifth Amendment, as suicide is looked down upon in the faith. Pope Francis will be furious when he learns about this, but Trump will be overjoyed.
