“I must f*cking stop you,” Maher shouted, pounding his hands on the desk in order to get a word in with rambling Trump surrogate Stephen Moore. He then preceded to read a recent study showing that 2015 had some of the best economic indicators in recorded American history. Moore had been rambling off worn out conservative arguments for several minutes in an effort to suggest that Obama had been a terrible president and that Trump would somehow save us from all the damage that’s been done over the last eight years. He also suggested that Trump won the debate; a remark that sparked laughter from many in the audience and a few of the other guests.
Things really broke down for him when he tapped Angela Rye on the shoulder. After a stern warning about touching, Angela explained that Moore also had a problem listening and giving others a chance to talk:
I know you’re really excited but let me be clear: this is not the Monday night debate and I’m not Hillary Clinton. So I’m just being very clear with you: I have something to say and I need you to let me talk. Thank you.
It took him all of 10 seconds before he began to interrupt her again. I wouldn’t have believed he was a representative of the Trump campaign if he’d allowed a woman to talk any longer. “This is going to be a great conversation,” Rye jabbed as the dusty old conservative continued to revise history. Finally, Maher stepped in and asked him to hold off for a second and let her get a couple of words in. And again, within seconds, he jumped in to derail what she was saying. He also looked around blankly as if he didn’t even understand what the others were saying when they asked him to shut up and listen for a moment.
Once she was allowed to talk, nearly half way through the entire show, she made a very good point. Far from being the herald of the common man as Stephen Moore was making Trump out to be, Trump has been sued dozens of times for mistreating his employees or failing to pay them altogether. Maher’s other guest then went on to make a point that completely destroyed Moore’s narrative. It’s almost as if Trump’s campaign can only win an argument by shouting over everyone else.
