Republicans, and the Trump Administration in general, are unspeakably cruel when it comes to their treatment of immigrants. This is not unexpected; after all, Donald Trump ran on a platform of building a great wall on America’s southern border in an effort to keep brown people out, said an Indiana-born judge could not be impartial because of his Mexican heritage, and has retweeted white nationalists, called neo-Nazis “very fine people,” and started his political career trying to delegitimize the first black president, Barack Obama, by saying he wasn’t born here. However, all of that pales in comparison to what Trump and his cronies he has installed in his despicable swamp of a government are doing now.
It turns out that as some kind of “deterrent,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions, along with the rest of Trump’s Administration are, as a matter of policy, ripping immigrant children from the arms of their parents at the border, whether they present themselves as trying to cross to seek asylum or not. Even worse, it seems that the administration has lost more than 1500 of these young children. Despicable, right? Not according to former Pennsylvania Senator and wannabe Handmaid’s Tale overlord Rick Santorum, who said of the situation on CNN:
I think this is a process going on a long time. The children come into detention — there is a vetting process of who the children are assigned to. It is a much larger group of kids and they are assigned to sponsors in this country who go through a process to be able to qualify to be sponsors and the children are placed in them.”
What happened — thousands more than the 1,500 you are talking about that they follow up with a lot of these — they follow up to find out where the children are and how they are doing. They found that 1,500 of them, somehow the sponsors and the kids fell off the radar. They haven’t checked in and they haven’t been able to find them. The reality is a lot of the sponsors in many cases have been checked out but they may have other reasons for not communicating or dropping off the system.”
Santorum’s co-panelist, Solis Doyle, tried to be reasonable with Santorum, as she responded:
It is unspeakably cruel. The parents are coming with their children because they are trying to escape some horror, they are coming to save their kids and their children are being torn away. Now we are finding that our government has lost these children? Where are the kids? As a mom I am — I just can’t think about a child, a 4 year old in a different country with strangers and now vulnerable to human trafficking and abuse — and there is nothing that these parents can do.”
Then again, since when have Republicans cared about children once they are born? They like to cut childcare funds, food stamps, funds for education – the list goes on. They like to claim they are pro-life, but what they are really doing is just trying to control women. They don’t give a damn about children – especially non-white children – and this proves it.
Vote these despicable bums out. Oh, and while you’re at it, stop giving them nationally televised platforms, as they hardly deserve it.
