On Thursday night/early Friday morning, the government shut down for the second time in as many months. While it is open again after Congress reached a funding deal on Friday morning, there is something disturbing about the brief time during which the government was not funded: the man who is supposedly in charge, Donald Trump, was sleeping like the man-baby “president” that he is. We know this because, according to Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), who appeared on Thursday night’s edition of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, the lights in the White House residence and the Oval Office were all pitch black. Here is the transcript of the conversation, via Politicus USA:
Rachel Maddow: Senator, there have been reports that the lights in the White House residence and the oval office are off. We certainly haven’t heard anything from the White House. Obviously, the White House is distracted by the scandal surrounding the staff secretary who was forced out today amid some disturbing revelations. Is there any indication at all that the president is working the phone into the wee hours, that the White House, the president himself are involved in trying to address this, treating this like it’s a problem?
Sen. Merkley: No. I don’t think the White House is engaged at all. And we certainly know that in terms of a piece of this puzzle, which is the issue of the DREAM Act, the president had a choice. He could be the deal maker. Or he could be the deal breaker. He chose to be the latter, that is the person who said I’m going the inflame immigration. I’m going to talk about MS-13 gangs, we are going to demonize all immigrants coming into America. That president that we saw emerge after an initial deal maker conference at the White House is the one that we seem to have. And he seems to be determined if you will to make this into a campaign issue rather than to resolve the legal status of our dreamers. And we don’t see him engaged in any way.”
And Merkley isn’t wrong about Trump’s immigration stance. After having personally benefited from, and watching his wife benefit from, the immigration policy known as family reunification, to now turn around and call it “chain migration” and try to get rid of it — imagine how Melania might feel if her husband accidentally sent her sister Ines “home” to a country she hasn’t seen in 20 years?
Now, we all know that Trump rarely actually works. He just holds signing ceremonies, nominates grossly unqualified people who are tossed his way by the brainwashed far-right bigots who blindly support him and stroke his ego, and, of course tweet dangerous, unhinged nonsense at anyone who dares to so much as think about looking at him the wrong way or uttering one word of criticism.
This is unacceptable. Nobody is running our nation, and that is why we are in such chaos. One party controls the entire federal government, and they get nothing useful done for the American people, all the while disgracing the nation on the world stage. Folks, we knew Donald Trump wasn’t fit to be president, and past instances of GOP control of the government have shown repeatedly that the Republican Party is not fit to govern. All they are fit to do is make the Founding Fathers roll over in their graves as they champion and empower Nazis (there’s even one who is openly running for office on the GOP ticket right now), try to usher in the very theocracy the Founders guarded against in the Constitution, and oppress any and all citizens who are not straight, white, male, middle class or above, and Christian.
This is no longer the republic the Founders gave us, folks. Vote these bums out in 2018 and 2020 – if we still have a nation left by then.
