The suddenly Bundyless standoff at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge continues, now down to 4 militants. Despite most of their number leaving or being captured, the remaining few insist that they are going to remain engaged in their occupation of the refuge compound, and continue posting video updates on Youtube.
Ammon Bundy has issued a statement via his lawyer, expressing “his authentic desire for them to stand down.”
Lissa Casey, who is Bundy’s attorney said:
“That message has been communicated to the remaining four and there’s nothing further to be done on our end. We have set our disagreements aside to save the lives. We’ve done what we can do.”
The militants appear to be down to generators for power and have stated that they will not surrender their position unless they are guaranteed immunity from prosecution. Otherwise, they say they are ready to die defending their position at the refuge — that, and Cliven Bundy told them to keep up the good fight:
“I’ll tell you one thing, we’re dang sure going to have to fight this battle over and over if we just give up right today. I mean, we’ve got a life lost, but that life was wasted.”
After all they, like “Tarp Man” LaVoy Finicum, will be “sacrificed for a good purpose” if they die in an ill-advised battle with the feds, according to Cliven Bundy.
A new rally, consisting of about 100 people, gathered in the nearby town to protest the shooting of armed militant LaVoy Finicum, who was killed when he attempted to pull a gun on federal officers at a roadside stop when he and fellow militants attempted to run a road block. It’s possible the new show of support might be emboldening the final few.
